Psalm 139:5 says, “You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.” This powerful verse speaks directly to the heart of God’s protective care and His personal presence in our lives—a truth that is both reassuring and deeply comforting, especially in the journey of parenting.
As parents, we carry a weight of responsibility. You're always on guard, ensuring your children are safe, guiding them through challenges, and showing them the love they need to thrive. There are times, however, when the pressure can feel overwhelming, especially when life seems unpredictable or outside of your control. In these moments, Psalm 139:5 provides a reminder: just as we watch over our children, God is watching over us.
The phrase “You hem me in behind and before” paints a picture of God’s complete and surrounding presence. He is ahead of you in the unknown moments yet to come, and He’s behind you, guarding over your past and what you’ve already faced. Nothing is beyond His reach. He holds your past, present, and future in His hands, offering peace and protection on all sides. Knowing this should bring deep reassurance—you are surrounded by God’s presence at every turn.
And it doesn’t end there. “You lay your hand upon me” carries an even more personal message. God’s hand on your life signifies His guidance, blessing, and care. When you feel lost, He gently leads you back. When you feel tired, He gives you strength. His hand on you is a reminder that you are never alone. He is not only protecting you from afar; He is close, with His hand of love and support resting on you through every challenge.
In parenting, these truths can bring incredible comfort. You can trust God not only with your own fears and struggles but also with your children, knowing that He surrounds them just as He surrounds you. There is peace in knowing that your family is held within His love and protection, no matter what each day may bring.
How does it feel to know that God is present before and behind you in every part of your life’s journey? In what ways can you rest more in His protective love today?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for surrounding me with Your love and protection. When I feel the weight of responsibility as a parent, help me to remember that You are always with me, guiding and caring for me and my family. Teach me to rest in Your presence and to trust that You are holding our past, present, and future in Your hands. Amen.
