In our desire to provide the best for our children, it’s easy to get caught up in the world’s definition of success. But Jeremiah 9:23-24 offers a profound reminder:
“This is what the Lord says: ‘Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,’ declares the Lord.”
As parents, the most important thing we can do for our children is to have a strong relationship with Christ. Accomplishments, wealth, and worldly wisdom fade, but a life rooted in God’s love and justice will have an eternal impact. When we focus on truly knowing God and living a life of faith, it reshapes the way we parent and, in turn, creates the foundation of our children’s understanding of Him.
Your worth, and the worth you impart to your children, should be based not on the things you accumulate or achieve but on a connection with God that reflects His kindness, justice, and righteousness. This is the kind of success that endures beyond generations.
Jesus reminds us in John 6:27, “Do not work for food that spoils but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” This challenges you to re-evaluate where you place your value. Success in the eyes of God looks vastly different than in the eyes of the world. True success lies in raising children who see love, kindness, and faithfulness modelled in their homes.
This means that the everyday acts of kindness, moments of patience, and times when you prioritize prayer over worldly achievement resonate far more deeply than any material accomplishment. It shows your children what it looks like to rely on God, teaching them that a life spent pursuing Him is where true fulfilment lies.
The value of the work we do at home—raising children with integrity, guiding them with love, and teaching them gratitude—is the kind of work that delights God. When we release our attachment to worldly definitions of success, we can fully embrace the worth God places in us.
Imagine the generational impact of a family that sees success not as wealth or status but as kindness, justice, and righteousness. That is a legacy worth building and one that pleases God.
So, as you go about your day, remember the words of Jeremiah 9. Allow them to be a reminder that the most significant legacy we can leave isn’t in things but in our pursuit of God. And in that pursuit, may we find true joy, fulfilment, and worth that our children can carry with them for a lifetime.
