In John 6:27, Jesus speaks about where true fullfilment comes from when He says, “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
These words offer a powerful reminder about where our focus should be. As parents, we naturally work hard to provide for our families, making sure physical needs are met and that our children feel safe and supported. But Jesus calls us to something deeper—to seek the nourishment that only He can provide, the kind that sustains beyond today’s concerns and leads to eternal life.
While it’s essential to work and to ensure our families are provided for, we are reminded here that worldly success, material possessions, and even accomplishments are temporary. They may bring fleeting comfort, but only a relationship with Jesus gives true and lasting fulfilment. When we prioritize our spiritual well-being, drawing near to Jesus and seeking His wisdom, we model for our children where ultimate fulfilment in life comes from: knowing and following Christ.
In seeking this lasting fulfilment, we have a unique opportunity to teach our children to value what is truly important. When they see us prioritizing time with God—whether through prayer, worship, or simply resting in His presence—they learn that our true worth and security are found in Him, not in what we accomplish or acquire. By parenting with a heart rooted in Christ, we pass on a legacy of faith, teaching them that true fulfilment is found not in worldly success but in a life devoted to God.
In a world that constantly tells us we need more, bigger, and better, let’s pause and reflect on what Jesus says we need most: “food that endures to eternal life.”
